Local Authority Artists Award Scheme

LOCAL VISUAL ARTISTS have received a boost through the continuation of the Perth & Kinross Council scheme for support-funding for their projects. The cash for the scheme comes from the Scottish Arts Council and is aimed to assist local visual artists to carry out their work.
Through a Perth & Kinross Artists Award, artists can receive financial assistance to enable them to stage exhibitions, or to work on particular projects that they would not be able to otherwise achieve.
Last year Ryan Hannigan from Aberfeldy was given funding (see below) to create an artists' book with other artists in the area, and Shona Leitch from Dunkeld received funding to develop her work in sculptural ceramics.

Support Level
This year awards will be made from £75 to £1000, and applications will be judged by members of the council's arts and heritage team, a member of the Scottish Arts Council visual art department and a member of the Perthshire Visual Arts Forum committee.

SAC will provide £2000 towards the fund for the coming year, with the council providing a further £1000.
Lifelong learning vice-convener Elizabeth Grant said "There is no doubt there is a strong public demand for more individual support for practicing artists within the region. These awards will benefit both the artists and the council. The artists will be given additional opportunities to showcase and develop their work, and the council will reinforce its strong relationship with local artistic communities.
"Most importantly, these awards will allow local artistic talent to flourish, and we are delighted we are able to continue the scheme."

Applications
The deadlines for applying to the fund will be 29 September 2006 and 26 February 2007. For details and an application form contact the Arts Development Service on 01738 477834 or email kirstyduncan@pkc.gov.uk or kjackson@pkc.gov.uk.
The application process will require a statement of around 500 words and a selection of around 6 - 10 images in digital or slide form.
Formal study costs, travel costs and work that has already been undertaken are all ineligible for assistance.
The quality of the artist's work is of the utmost importance. Successful applications will show that the artist has a sustained commitment to their art form and has a body of work produced independently of formal education.
