New Dunkeld Gallery

A new gallery has been opened in Dunkeld and features the work of artist Murdo A MacLeod DA. Murdo was born in Glasgow and trained at Glasgow School of Art specialising in drawing and painting.

After graduating he taught in the city before moving to the Isle of Lewis where he taught at the Nicolson Institute in Stornoway. This was quite a culture shock for this Glaswegian, but he enjoyed his time teaching there. He established his own gallery on Lewis in 1976, and left teaching in 1985 to become a full-time professional artist.

Murdo told Comment: “We had been on the look-out for premises in Dunkeld for some time, so when my wife Dolina spotted the shop at 2 High Street for sale, we moved quickly to secure it and set about the refurbishments to turn it into a gallery to display my work.”

His interests include figurative work, Perthshire landscapes and Hebridean seascapes. He also produces prints of old Scottish scenes and customs, a set of which has been acquired by the National Library of Scotland.

Murdo and his wife Dolina, who was born in Harris, now live in Scone. She tutors Gaelic at the Gaelic College on Skye and at Dundee University. She will also be helping Murdo out at the gallery.

Murdo is happy to welcome browsers to his gallery and enjoys taking time to chat about his art. The gallery is open daily 10am – 6pm and closed Thursdays and Sundays
