Painter/Poet: Watermill to Stage the Unveiling

“IT'S TRUE !” said Eric Timms, “I woke up as usual on Monday morning and, when I started painting, I had become a Seascapeist. Check out the sea that I am painting at the moment and tell me I’m wrong. When these changes happen I have to go with the flow. The ocean and I go way back to my surfing days in South Africa although, hey, I’m living and working about the furthest from the sea that you can get in Scotland.”

Eric set up his first studio in Durban where he achieved a 2nd in the prestigious ‘Sanlam Awards for New Artists.’ He fled to England in 1987 first to Hertfordshire and then to Sussex. From there he became established as a genuine surrealist when he was accepted as a member of the ‘Hourglass’ movement founded by Salvador Dali and based in Paris.

During 2002 Eric and his wife Penni relocated to Strathtay where, besides continued surrealist creations, he has been working on portrait commissions in both traditional and contemporary styles and in a variety of media.

Now transmuted to a Seascapeist, he quipped that his next change is probably obvious. ‘Yep,” he said, “I figure that it will be into a full-blown Searealist.”

Painting & Poetry

In fact Timms can anticipate another more imminent change. He will morph into a Professor of Modern Art Solutions specialising in ‘Paint and Poetism’ at the end of this month at The Watermill in Aberfeldy. There, on Thursday and Friday 29/30 June, with his wordsmith collaborator John Ramsay, he will stage ‘The Conclusion’ – the sequel to a novel event held in Fearnan Hall on 6 April past.

Starting at 7.30pm in the Café-Conservatory Level of the venue, the evenings will consist of a Show and Tell of the Process. This will explore and explain the interactive event at the Fearnan Arts’ night, and how it initiated and inspired the resulting painting.

This will culminate in the unveiling of the canvas and the 'deconstruction', for the audience's benefit, of the resulting artwork.

A short Discussion Workshop will follow to situate this process within the history of practices employed by the surrealist movement in generating inspiration among its proponents.

Draw Attraction

A free draw will be made for the winning entrance ticket number (60 only on each night) for a signed/dedicated, mounted but unframed print of the painting. These will be accompanied by autographed prints of the poem.

100 limited edition prints are to be available. Those attending will have full bookshop and current exhibition access, and their £5 admission includes a greeting glass of wine. A pay bar will be available for continued libation.

The event is organised in collaboration with Fearnan Arts Club and tickets, strictly limited to 60 per night, are available exclusively from the Watermill, Mill Street, Aberfeldy (ticketline 01887 822896)
