Watermill Reading Recommendations - July

It’s raining today, so it must be the start of the summer holidays. I hope that the weather will be better by the time you read these recommendations. If not, maybe the books picked will help to fill wet summer days.

“The Island” by Victoria Hislop is set on the island of Crete. Alexis is on the brink of a life-changing decision and longs to find out about her mother’s past. All her mother will admit to is growing up in a small Cretan village. But when Alexis visits Crete she uncovers a moving story of a family torn apart by war, tragedy and passion.

Laurie Graham retells the story of Edward, and Mrs Simpson and the abdication crisis in “Gone With the Windsors”. This is a laugh out loud book in the form of a diary by Wallis Simpson’s old school friend, Maybell. Evoking the time of upper class 1930s with dinners, yachts, dresses and lots and lots of jewels!

If you want a seriously funny light read look no further than the 11th book by Janet Evanovich, which has just, been published in paperback. This is crime writing at it’s funniest involving the inept bounty hunter Stephanie Plum; her tough cop boyfriend Joe; Ranger the sexiest bounty hunter in America and aged Grandma Mazur, who longs to be a bounty hunter.

If the children need something to keep them occupied on wet days I can recommend a range of activity packs, which include colouring books, stickers, pencils and books Happy reading during July.
