Jings Second Artist in Public Studio

Following Eric Timms' month in residence at the studio set up at Jings! in Dunkeld Street, Aberfeldy, a further Highland Perthshire artist is occupying the hot seat (see below).

Roger Lee of Calvine is currently exhibiting and carrying out work in progress, and he welcomes the public to drop in daily between 10.30am and 4.30pm to chat and browse.

Born and raised in industrial Lancashire Roger was, nevertheless, always interested in wildlife and the countryside. During some school vacations he worked at the Wildfowl Trust at Slimbridge where the Trust’s founder, the renowned painter of waterfowl Sir Peter Scott, took an interest in his early painting and gave him some informal tuition which he has never forgotten.

After graduating from university, he began his working life in Malawi, setting up the country’s first forest entomology unit and, wherever he could, sketching animals in their strikingly beautiful Malawi landscapes.

Returning to the UK he 'escaped' to the Highlands with his wife where he was able to devote more time to painting whilst working part-time for the Scottish Wildlife Trust as its North Region Officer. After several happy years on the Black Isle, he moved with his family to their present large, old house in Highland Perthshire to be closer to the bigger cities and their greater potential markets.

"I exhibited widely but with decreasing frequency as more and more commissions came in, until by the late 80’s all my work was commissioned," he told Comment. "That remains the case. I intend from now on to reserve the occasional painting so that I can hold a long overdue exhibition in 2-3 years’ time."
