Children's Book Festival - Preview

The first literary festival in Scotland dedicated exclusively to children’s books will be hosted at the Aberfeldy Watermill on Saturday and Sunday 12/13 May. Nicola Morgan (pictured), author of best-selling book Blame My Brain, told Comment what to expect from her events, and about the festival.

"We have stereotypical views of teenagers but the truth is more complicated, varied, interesting and positive,” she said. “I'll be offering a reassuring and revealing insight into what's going on in the brains of teenagers. When people actually analyse what's going on in their lives and brains, it's incredibly reassuring for teenagers as well as their frazzled parents and teachers.

“Also, I am going to be giving a sneak preview of a new brain book, which isn't published till November. It's called Know Your Brain and this will be the very first time I have spoken about it. It's like a book premiere! And, if the audience is very good, I will give everyone a copy of my utterly delicious recipe for Brain Cakes.”

Novels
She continued: “My other event is about my novels (reading age of 11+). I'll be talking about the weirdness of Mondays are Red and testing the audience for the fascinating condition of synaesthesia.

“Then I'll be talking about the shocking and gruesome history behind Fleshmarket, set amongst the surgeons in Edinburgh before the days of anaesthetic - what you will learn will horrify you and you will be extremely glad you were not alive in those days.

“I'll also talk about my newest historical thriller, The Highwayman's Footsteps, and will read a heart-stopping cliff-hanger from its unpublished sequel, The Highwayman's Curse, which is coming in November. Another premiere!

The author reckons that local folk are incredibly lucky to have the Aberfeldy Watermilll Bookshop on their doorstep. “Kevin and Jayne do a remarkable job of what I call real book-selling. They really get people reading and talking about books,” she enthused.

“So the idea of a children's festival is exactly the sort of dynamic and enterprising thing they would do - it's going to be wonderful. And I'm looking forward to having more carrot cake too ..."

The Nicola Morgan events will take place at 12.30pm – 1.30pm and 3.30pm – 4.30pm on Saturday 12 May. For booking information on this, or other events at the Children’s Festival, call The Watermill on 01887 822896 or email info@abefeldywatermill.com
