Events for Aspiring Young Writers
The young-minds of Highland Perthshire will get the chance to develop page turning cliff-hangers, thickening plots and fun-filled adventures next month, as the Aberfeldy Watermill hosts a series of events teaching children how to write their very own best-seller.
To show that creative writing is not just for adults, award-winning writer Linda Cracknell will lead a session on how to write great stories for 9-12 year olds (What Happens Next, Saturday May 12, 11am –12noon).
Many of us have exciting ideas for characters or the beginning of stories, but they somehow run out of steam before the end. In this workshop, we’ll be looking at ‘what happens next? It’s a chance to collect tips and try out ideas for writing great stories right to the end,’ said Linda. |

Birnam-based author Jamie Jauncey will lead an intriguing discussion into the origins of a story (Where Do Stories Come From? Sunday May 13, 11am-12noon). Jamie will talk about the difference between fantasy and reality, comedy and adventure, mystery and suspense, real life and imagination. The session will end with a fun exercise which will get everyone started on their own story.
There will also be a chance for children to collect tips on how write a thriller, as Catherine MacPhail, author of Wheels, will lead a discussion on how she brings together the elements of a suspense-filled tale.
The Watermill Children’s Book Festival in Aberfeldy, which will take place from 12 – 13 May 2007, will include talks by renowned children’s authors including Mairi Hedderwick (Katie Morag stories), Catherine MacPhail, Nicola Morgan, Keith Gray and Katie Grant, as well as readings, workshops and a session aimed at helping parents choose the right books for their children.
Tickets for the events are £3 and must be booked in advance. Bookings are already coming in, so book early to avoid disappointment!
