Atholl Estates History Booklet

A new history of Atholl Estates, written by Jane Anderson, archivist at Blair Castle, has been published by Perth and Kinross Heritage Trust.

A colourful account of the estate, the castle and the life of those who lived and worked there is well documented in the castle archives, from which this booklet has drawn most of its content. The 36-page full-colour booklet is also richly illustrated with over fifty historic maps and early photographs from the remarkable archive at the castle.
Throughout its long history, the Estate has made a significant contribution to both the social and economic fabric of highland Perthshire and through its innovative management has secured an important place in Scottish history.

The booklet has several chapters covering topics such as family history, the deer forest, forestry and agriculture, communications and settlements and buildings.

Series editor David Strachan said: “We are really excited about this latest publication. Jane Anderson has provided a concise and very readable story, and the wealth of illustrative material held in the Blair castle archives is truly remarkable.”

The publication is the latest in a series published by Perth and Kinross Heritage Trust with other titles including Fortingall: Kirk and Village; The Origins of Perth: A Medieval Burgh; Cupmarked Stones in Strathtay; The Romans in Perthshire and Historic Dunning: A Perthshire Village. All of the publications are in full colour and are available, priced £2 to £3 from the AK Bell Library shop, Perth Museum and Art Gallery, or direct from the Trust Office’s at the library lodge, or online at www.pkht.org.uk.

Atholl Estates: A Brief History is also available from Blair Castle Shop (contact on 01796 481207 or office@blair-castle.co.uk).
