Euro Accolade for Local Photographer
Local amateur photographer who is a member of Fortingall Art Society recently received a “Highly Commended” accolade in the European Wildlife Photographer of the Year.
The photography competition, run by the Society of German Nature Photographers (Gesellschaft Deutscher Tierfotografen e.V. - GDT) seeks to identify and award prizes to the best images of natural history taken by photographers within Europe. An accolade within this prestigious international setting brings great credit to Niall Riddell of Glenlyon.

Niall’s image (above) was taken where he is currently living, in Oxfordshire, and is of a flock of Starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) returning to roost in a reed bed. Whilst many starlings can be seen at roosts like these, the RSPB lists the bird as a ‘red list’ species due to a serious decline in population in the UK (66%) since the 1970’s.
On this occasion Niall spent the evening viewing up to 60,000 starlings from beside the reed bed and shot his image as a cloud of Starlings circled above him.
He told Comment: “This was perhaps one of the most exhilarating experiences in my life”. (More of Niall’s images can be seen at www.lyonimages.co.uk)
