New Book on Old Pitlochry

Old Pitlochry, Strathtummel and Rannoch

by Bernard Byrom £7.99, ISBN 978 1 84033 371 8

Published by Stenlake Publishing Limited, 54-58 Mill Square, Catrine KA5 6RD; 01290 551122 www.stenlake.co.uk

The book charts the development of Pitlochry and out along Strathtummel to the Rannoch Moor, in period photographs from the late Victorian period to the 1950s.

The photographs illustrate the growth of the town, and the story is developed of a growing town with its mills and increasingly important tourist industry. Its industry and commerce are covered with pictures and tales of its post office, and the importance of the railway and wool milling.

Stories of the early history of the hotels mingle with those of the hydro electric scheme and the development of the Festival Theatre.

The book also ventures out along Strathtummel, to garrison village of Kinloch Rannoch and covers the sad story of the SS Gitana, before finally venturing out along the old road to the isles into the wilds of Rannoch Moor.
