Pottermania in Highland Perthshire

Midnight 20 July saw a queue from the front door of Aberfeldy’s Watermill Bookshop stretching round the corner and up to the main road. The local constabulary were present to ‘keep order’ – a bit different from their usual Friday night call outs!

As well as local readers, several regular customers of The Watermill came from 20 to 30 miles away, but some came even further - thirty children from Ohio, USA turned up to get copies and make sure they could read the book before their friends back home.

Over 100 copies were sold at midnight, with another hundred sold on Saturday.

In Dunkeld, to help with crowd control a team of witches and wizards from Sweet Words bookshop were on hand. Muggles, wizards and witches were admitted to a magical garden party where themed food, drink and party games were on offer.
At the witching hour, a queue of nearly 60 had formed outside the shop, temporarily blocking Brae Street and giving the local constabulary a period of head scratching.
Squealing with delight, Potter fans ran from the shop displaying their Harry Potter bags, commemorative scrolls and wizarding sweets.
Nan Johnston, owner of Sweet Words, said “What a fantastic evening. Sales of the book exceeded all expectations and we were delighted with the local support.”
