'Silver Sea' -Book Review

A sequel to The Healing Island, this continues the saga of Rob Chalmers, doctor and now laird, on Laigersay, a fictional island on Scotland’s west coast. A lively tale of island life, its highs and lows, its joys and hardships, its pleasures and regrets, set 40 or so years ago before mobile phones and internet.
A small community, sometimes seemingly a goldfish bowl, yet contains surprising secrets. A place where some dramas are real, and others only perceived but no less influential for all that. Accurate and enthusiastic descriptions of wildlife and of nature generally show that observation and research went hand in hand with imagination before pen was put to paper. Midges and wet weather do feature although perhaps not as much as in real life – we have enough of them anyway. |

Nearly all of us like a medical mystery and there are some enjoyable little tales between the covers of this book. Sensitive and thoughtful pictures of people by a man of whom this novel is clearly a touch autobiographical. A man for whom patients were people and not customers. Touches of humour are sprinkled among the pages, and I enjoyed the digs at officialdom, especially in the shape of an officious (un)civil servant and his pipe.
I must not tell you more but let you read what I found an easy, sometimes thought provoking, and always enjoyable read.
